20200504M Day 125: Happy 43rd Birthday Mike Schaupp – RIP and May the Force of your Spirit Live On

Michael Schaupp, also known by his musician name Jackson Danny, was born in Carmel County on May 4th, 1977.

Screen Shot 2020-05-04 at 12.25.25 PM

He was riding his 1996 Honda motorcycle northbound on Highway 17 around 1:25 pm, Dec 10th, 2013, when a woman driving a black 1994 Ford Explorer SUV made an illegal turn onto the highway and drove into his path. Schaupp hit the SUV and was thrown 20 feet across the roadway. He was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries. The woman left the scene of the accident and abandoned the vehicle. Three months later, she turned herself in and was charged with a felony count of hit-and-run causing injury or death. The following song was played at her trial. It had been performed by Mike a few months before his death. The name of the song and the woman – Joline.

In the song, Mike changed the lyrics a bit. It is interesting to see the changes he made. Here are the lyrics as best I can reconstruct them – some changes of interest in bold from the original song by Dolly Parton. The “To never love again” change is in a stanza that is a mixture of two different stanzas.

Jolene … Jolene … Jolene … Jolene
I’m beggin you don’t take my man
Jolene … Jolene … Jolene … Jolene
Please don’t you take him can
Please don’t take him cuz you can

<Instrumental>

Your beauty is beyond compare
Flamin’ locks of auburn hair
Skin of ivory … eyes emerald green
Smile is like a breath of spring
Voice is like a summer rain
I cannot compete … Jolene

Jolene … Jolene … Jolene … Jolene
Beggin’ you, don’t take my man
Jolene … Jolene … Jolene … Jolene
Please don’t take him cuz you can
Please just take him cuz you can

<Instrumental>

And you could have your choice of men
To never love again
You don’t know what it means to me, Jolene
I had to have this talk with you now
My happiness depends on you
Whatever you decide, Jolene

Jolene … Jolene … Jolene … Jolene
I’m beggin’ you don’t take my man
Jolene … Jolene … Jolene … Jolene
Please don’t take him cuz you can
Please just take him cuz you can

Mike’s fatal accident was part of a story written by Jennifer Wadsworth for the July 8-15, 2015 edition of Metro, a local newspaper in San Jose, CA. The story was about Lupin Lodge, where Joline worked and/or lived at the time. For some reason, the original link for the story goes nowhere and there is a shorter version of the story. Here is an excerpt of the original story:

Michael Schaupp left Santa Cruz around midday Dec. 10, 2013, for a 2pm class at Ex’pression College in Emeryville. The 36-year-old father and design student had driven the same northward Highway 17 route countless times on his 1996 Honda VLX motorcycle. Drivers who shared the winding mountain road with him that day said he looked at ease, like an experienced rider. And he was.

But about a half-hour into his commute, a 1994 Ford Explorer shot out onto Highway 17 from Idylwild Drive in a southbound arc that cut off Schaupp and sent him hurtling to the shoulder, according to detailed reports by California Highway Patrol officers. A trail of blood plotted his trajectory. The Explorer’s 47-year-old driver, Joline Fay Cohen, scrambled out of the SUV just as another car pulled up to the scene.

Oh my God, I just killed that guy,” she told the witness, per the CHP. “Did you see him hit my car? What should I do?” Without waiting for an answer, she hopped back in the driver’s seat and drove away. A second witness pulled onto the shoulder and put a blanket on Schaupp, protecting him from the winter chill until help arrived.

A short distance north, Cohen, in a long black coat and dry dirty- blonde hair, left her car at Bear Creek Road and began walking along the shoulder, the collision report continues. Campbell resident Brandon Rohzen told police that he picked her up in his minivan, thinking she’d just got into a fender- bender and could use a lift. From the passenger seat, he said he remembers her calling Lupin’s office landline. “I hit somebody,” she shouted hysterically. “I think they might be dead.” Horrified, Rohzen slammed on the brakes and told her to get out of his car.

Schaupp died two days later at Stanford Hospital. Yet three full months passed before Cohen surrendered herself to authorities on hit-and-run charges that landed her in a Central Valley women’s prison.

Lupin residents claim Lori Kay harbored a fugitive during that time, leaving them no choice, they said, but to tip off CHP investigators to Cohen’s whereabouts. As a live-in assistant for several years to Lori Kay, Cohen ran errands, oversaw the main office and, according to CHP tipsters, had a reputation for smoking meth and driving erratically. Lupin management tried to distance itself from the damage, announcing online that the club had fired her as office employee before the crash. “She was allowed to stay because there are such thing as tenancy laws,” Lori Kay explained.

But the tragedy raised more questions about Lupin’s hiring practices. In an ongoing wrongful death lawsuit against Cohen, Schaupp’s mother, Denise, and 19-year-old son, Caleb, also name Lupin as a defendant. The Schaupp family attorneys claim that Cohen was acting “within the scope of her employment” while driving the
SUV and that Lupin is vicariously liable because it employed her “with knowledge of her history of reckless driving, erratic behavior and substance use.”

Obituary of Michael Carl Schaupp

Born in Carmel, CA Mikey: heart of lion, strength and steadfastness of a bull, playfulness of a laughing monkey, sensitivity and wisdom of an elephant, protective and nurturing as a mother bear, connected and ethereal as a spirit bird, and humble as a man. Born with big dark eyes and a deep gaze, Mikey often surprised others with his level of attentive observation as a baby. As a lil’ one, he loved the outdoors, preferring to sleep outside under the stars and up in his treehouse. A smile, soulful kind eyes, enduring loyalty and readiness to help were his tokens of friendship. His voice rang clear with passion, touching the core of life’s beauty, pain and mystery. With each song he wrote, he invited the possibility for a better world. Deeply embodied, he was a model for connection to one’s integrity and truth. His quick wit & easy sense of humor were medicine to our hearts. He understood that life, love, and friendship were a fragile and important gift, and if nurtured and protected, could all be eternal. Your love Dana Schlick, mother, Denise Schaupp, and beloved son will together forever embody your energy. May your journey to the next life be filled with adventurous trails, beautiful music, freedom and so much love. You radiated in this world and you’ll shine as a star in the next. All who knew you were so blessed to have you for 13,373 days. Your embrace of love, friendship, and generosity will live on in our hearts, memories and in everything that we do. He lived the lyrics from his song To Live, may we do the same: To love my world, To give myself, To live and live and live. Memorial will be on the Winter Solstice, Saturday, December 21st, from noon to sunset, at Seymour Marine Discovery Center. Please bring your favorite dish to share, and something that withstands the elements that reminds you of him (rock, stone, wood- creativity welcomed!) for a collaborative memorial sculpture.

20200503u Day 124: Tantra Yoga and Dance

Chiang Mai Flower Festival Parade – Feb. 2, 2019

This morning I listened to a tantra lecture on polarity. Mahasiddha Yoga is offering free classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. My partner and I attended three of their workshops offered last year in Chiang Mai, Thailand. We were there during the Chiang Mai Flower Festival and I remember walking outside during a class break and taking the pictures of the festival parade.

One of the polarity exercises I remember from the year-ago class involved the polarity of masculine and feminine energy. Those representing masculine energy paired up, faced each other, and held a solid stance while looking each other in the eyes and maintaining a fixed, unemotional expression. Then, those representing feminine energy came into the room and dance around, trying to attract the gaze and attention of the masculine. If any of the masculine energy holders lost focus, then their partner would quickly reach out and slap/tap their shoulder to bring them back into focus. The goal of the exercise was to feel the difference between the masculine, grounding, mass-like energy, and the feminine, dynamic, wave-like energy.

After the tantra lecture, I participated in a 4 hour online dance workshop, Dance Alive, by Mariane Karou. It was recommended by one of my housemates and three of us in the house did it together. I had a lot of resistance going into it and I wanted to leave after about 10 minutes into it. I then lied down on the floor and took a short nap. When I awoke, Mariane was talking about Resistance, and how Resistance makes us Stronger. I noticed that many of her words resonated with me and I saw an alignment with Universe Surfing. One of these involved focus – focusing your mind and your body on your goals. When you encounter resistance, then push yourself through it. When your mind gets distracted, then focus your mind on encouragement. Another was about the power of fluidity. As we moved our bodies in a fluid manner, she motivated the idea that by being fluid and flexible, we can more easily adjust and respond to changes in our environment. I imagined how a surfer focuses their attention on riding a wave and develops a fluid muscle response to changes in the waves and their position on the waves in order to continue riding a wave.

During the movement exercise, I imagined a technique for surfing through the universe. The idea is to imagine a sequence of parallel universes between the universe in which you feel yourself and the universe in which you want to be. For me, I imagined how I have a very undeveloped set of planning and organizing skills. I want to be in a universe in which I can make a task list, prioritize it, and check things off. I did my imagining while I was dancing, and then I froze my movement. As I froze my movement, I imagined myself continuing to move but in parallel universe space, not physical space. I focused my attention on the changes going on inside my body as it stayed frozen. I held that position for almost a minute as I imagined myself moving to my desired universe. When I felt myself mentally in that new universe, I began dancing again and was ready to think of something new that I wanted to change in my reality.

20200502S Day 123: Universe Surfing Hypotheses 1, 2, 3

Surfing Waves at Steamer Lane, Santa Cruz, CA – April 24th, 2020

Santa Cruz, CA – 20200502S – Universe Surfing 1, 2, 3

As I’m typing this, the beautiful beings in the house I’m living in are getting ready to have an Ecstatic Dance outside. I have a choice now. I can continue typing OR I can stop typing and start dancing. Both universes exist regardless of the choice I make. Neither universe is of lesser value than the other. My quantum self will experience both. My classical self will experiencing dancing now, and writing later. I will return …

Hwy 1 North of Santa Cruz, CA – May 2nd, 2020

I just returned from driving up the highway to try to catch the sunset. It was too cloudy for a nice sunset, but I did get a walk in along the coast. A sign along the highway notified travelers that the beaches were closed from 11am until 5pm due to COVID-19. The beach parking lots along the highway were closed and so people were parking on the side of the road.

I’m now watching the scene in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in which Daisy gets hit by a taxi:

If only one thing had happened differently: if that shoelace hadn’t broken; or that delivery truck had moved moments earlier; or that package had been wrapped and ready, because the girl hadn’t broken up with her boyfriend; or that man had set his alarm and got up five minutes earlier; or that taxi driver hadn’t stopped for a cup of coffee; or that woman had remembered her coat, and got into an earlier cab, Daisy and her friend would’ve crossed the street, and the taxi would’ve driven by. But life being what it is – a series of intersecting lives and incidents, out of anyone’s control – that taxi did not go by, and that driver was momentarily distracted, and that taxi hit Daisy, and her leg was crushed.

And that brings me back to universe surfing. In the scene, reality is described as a “series of intersecting lives and incidents, out of anyone’s control.” This matches with the theory of universe surfing in the sense of intersecting lives and incidents. However, these intersections take place in a multi-dimensional reality where each universe with an event is matched by a universe without the event. So, there’s a universe in which Daisy did not get hit by the taxi and, instead, continued to dance.

Universe Surfing Hypothesis 1 – The classical universe we experience is equal in reality to the multitude of parallel classical universes that we do not experience.

Under this hypothesis, while Daisy’s dance career is forever affected by the her leg being crushed in the taxi accident, as her life continues, the two different universe timelines appear to merge back together.

Universe Surfing Hypothesis 2 – Unexpected events are more connected to your possible futures than to your possible pasts, and therefore are useful signposts and windows to your possible futures.

Under this hypothesis, when Daisy’s was injured in the accident, this unexpected event showed a window to universes in which she was not a dancer. This opened a window to see futures of building a relationship with Benjamin Button, which would be less likely in the universe where she continued dancing.

Universe Surfing Hypothesis 3 – Related events influence each other and the order in which we experience two events gives us the classical impression that one event caused the other.

I decided to put this hypothesis on the non-directionality of time because of the theme of the movie, with Benjamin Button aging backwards. This felt synchronistic to me since it was one of my roommates who started watching the movie while I was writing this.

20200501F Day 122: El Salchichero Meat Market, Kim Jong Un alive, and Biden’s #MeToo moment felt 27 yrs ago

Meat selection at El Salchichero, Santa Cruz, CA – May 1st, 2020

Santa Cruz, CA: A few days ago, President Trump issued an executive order to protect meat supplies. At El Salchichero in Santa Cruz, CA, there was still a good selection of meat, including steak cuts and a great variety of chicken and pork sausages.

On the entrance was posted signs saying everyone over age 12 must wear a face covering, which could be a bandana, neck gaiter, or home made mask.

El Salchichero, Santa Cruz, CA – May 1st, 2020

Today, I moved out of the studio room that I rented the last few weeks. I can feel a universe in which I was quarantined there, because that’s how it felt. Even though the studio was in the back of a house, I didn’t engage with the other housemates. The door to the house was even duct taped to minimize air flow between the house and the studio. I am now back to living in a community house and feeling the universes in which I’m back in Texas.

The stock market was down almost 3% today.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made his first public appearance in weeks. Four days ago, when asked about rumors of Kim Jong Un’s death, Trump said that he knew of Kim Jong Un’s condition, but couldn’t talk about it. Today, Trump said that he make talk to Kim Jong Un this weekend.

Joe Biden and Tara Reade are in the news regarding her accusation that he sexual assault ed her 27 years ago. She has given a detailed account of the assault, to which Biden has replied “I am saying unequivocally. It never, never happened, and it didn’t.” Biden also said today “I am absolutely positive that nobody that I am aware of has been made aware of any complaint — a formal complaint — or complaint — made by Tara Reade against me at the time this allegedly happened 27 years ago until I announced for — I guess it was of April or May of this year.”

There are interesting parallel universes around the Biden/Reade story. One is that Reade has changed her name and so in some universes is known by a different name. The other is Reade’s mother called into Larry King Live and asked for help. There is now videos of this episode, from 27 years ago, posted on YouTube. It amazes me how 27 years ago, Tara Reade’s Mom felt the universe today and made the decision to call into Larry King Live.

20200430h Day 121: Last day at the beach in some universes

Capitola Beach, Capitola CA – April 30, 2020

Universes continue to collide. In many universes, today is the last day that beaches are open in California. NPR published a story about this today (Calif. Governor Expected To Order Closure Of All Beaches And State Parks). The story was about a memo sent on Wednesday to the California Police Chiefs Association. The memo read:

After the well-publicized media coverage of overcrowded beaches this past weekend, in violation of Governor Newsom’s Shelter in Place Order, the Governor will be announcing [Thursday] that ALL beaches and all state parks in California will be closed, effective Friday, May 1st.

Also Today, NPR published another story – this time without ALL emphasize, and instead referencing only Orange County (Governor Temporarily Closes All Beaches And State Parks in Orange County, Calif.):

“We’re gonna do a hard close in that part of the state, just in the Orange County area. We’re working with the county,” the governor announced Thursday.

In Santa Cruz County, a new shelter-in-place order is in place starting May 1st. Regarding beaches, the new order is more specific:

What does the modified SIP order say about beaches?

 • Beaches will be closed 11-5 but may be traversed during these hours for the purposes of water sports.
 • Beach parkways will remain open for use during these hours, as will the water.
 • Outside of these hours, beaches are only open for recreational activities to promote physical and mental health, such as walking, running, cycling and water sports.
 • At no time will sitting, lying, standing, sunbathing, sightseeing, and other non-exercise activities be allowed at beaches. No umbrellas, shade structures, tents, barbeques and grills, coolers, beach chairs, or other conveyances for sitting or lying will be allowed on the beaches.

The differences in the new order are:

What is different in the April 30th Santa Cruz County order from the March 31ST order?

 • All essential businesses will be required to follow minimum basic safety precautions, including physical distancing and face covering requirements, and post health and safety information (Appendix A).
 • Allows non-emergent healthcare services in accordance with State directives and guidance, including elective surgeries and other services which may have been delayed. Healthcare facilities must comply with State guidance around Personal Protective Equipment and other measures.
 • Permits construction in accordance with State directives and guidance, with proper physical distancing protocols (Appendix B).
 • Permits real estate transactions in accordance with State directives and guidance.
 • Permits individuals to move to a new residence; however, if moving into or out of Santa Cruz County, individuals are strongly encouraged to self-quarantine in their new residence for 14 days.
 • Permits landscaping and gardening, tree trimming, and other outdoor services.
 • Permits wholesale and retail nurseries, and other businesses that support outdoor services.
 • Allows the use of golf courses and driving ranges with documented protocols that are outlined Appendix C of the revised order.
 • Allows stable groups of 12 or fewer children for recreational or educational purposes. Such activities must be carried out in stable, “closed” groups of 12 of fewer, as described in the Order.
 • Outdoor recreational areas and activities with high-touch equipment or that encourage gathering such as team sports, pools and playgrounds will not be permitted to return at this time.

 • Adds those who manufacture, distribute, sell, rent, lease, repair or maintain vehicles and other transportation equipment as essential businesses, with social distancing requirements.
 • Includes fabric and craft stores as an essential business for purposes of supplying materials to create face coverings and other personal protective equipment (PPE).
